About Tony Hartawan
Tony Hartawan is the dedicated owner of TONYRAKA Gallery in Bali, a prominent figure in the creative arts with nearly 30 years of experience. He took over the Raka Gallery in 1997, founded in 1968 by his father, A. A. Gede Raka Wirayuda, a distinguished wood carver. Tony revitalized the gallery by blending antiques from across the Indonesian archipelago with contemporary artworks from renowned artists.
With a background in Architecture from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in Surabaya, Tony merges his multidisciplinary skills to create spaces that harmonize with the natural environment. His approach to art and architecture reflects a balance of tradition and innovation, driven by a deep love for self-discovery and a commitment to cultural progression.
Tony's work extends beyond gallery exhibitions, as he integrates this motto into his architectural projects by incorporating sustainable practices. Inspired by his cultural roots and a profound respect for the environment, Tony creates spaces that harmonize with nature. His projects, such as the reclaimed wood and permaculture garden in Babakan, Bali, reflect a deep understanding of local history and resources, aiming to foster a symbiotic relationship between people and the planet. By blending tradition with innovation, Tony's approach not only preserves cultural heritage but also promotes sustainable living, ensuring that growth and progress are achieved with wisdom and respect for the environment. TONYRAKA ART GALLERY
TONYRAKA ART GALLERY established in 1968 by A.A Gede Raka Wirayuda (before the name was Raka Gallery), formerly known as a remarkable carver. For nearly 30 years the gallery has been accumulating and selling its collection, which mostly are fine wood carving artwork.
In 1997, the business continued by his son, A.A Bagus Tony Hartawan, who finally broaden the item range of the gallery. The gallery starts to present modern and contemporary artworks (paintings, sculptures and instalations). Tonyraka Art Gallery also represent some overseas artist, which most of them have been lives and work in Indonesia especially Bali.
